He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Matthis and Willie Matthis; and his sister Connie Hall. He is survived by: his wife Roberta Reid Matthis; his son Gary Matthis (Jayanne) of Fox Chapel, PA; and his granddaughters, Megan and Hope Matthis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Church in Hamlet, NC.
