He was predeceased by: his wife Irene "Rene" Smith (Lewis); his grandchild Ryan Bopp; his parents, Donald Smith and Wilma Smith; and his sister Edith Eisenhuth (Dale).

He is survived by: his children, Laura A. Thompson, Jr. (Richard), Donald H. Smith (Suzanne), Harold M. Smith, Jr. (Amy Lynn), Renee G. Recker (Timothy) and Kimberley Christy (Donald); his grandchildren, Richard Thompson III, Angela Peters (Stephen), Christina Monroe (Jayson), Zachary Bopp (Katy), Nicholas Smith, Taylor Smith, Corey Bopp, Nicole Berenda (Craig), Benjamin Smith, Sydney Smith, Justin, Joshua and Luke Recker; his great grandchildren, Madison Monroe, Myles Gratzmiller, Wrenna Peters, Kolson Peters of Jayson, Monroe, Mason Berenda, Zachary Bopp, Jr., Saige Recker, Zara Peters and Delainey Berenda; and his sister Patricia Robinson (late Kenneth). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, friends and his fur baby.
