He is survived by: his wife Joan Diederich (Hottes); his sister Jill Heider (Diederich); his daughters, Gretchen Green, Katherine Vogel and Ann Diederich; his nephews, Peter Daniel John and Aaron; and his grandchildren, Gannon, Gibson Jack and Luke.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation in his name to the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy or the Neighborhood Academy.
