He is survived by: his significant other Carolyn Girson; his children, Sam Berkovitz (Deborah), Sandra Tepper and Cynthia Goldstein (James); his grandchildren, Shaina Anderson (John), Molly Blicha (Nick), Eli Berkovitz, Noah Berkovitz, Lindsey Shafer (Steven), Jordana Goldstein and Max Goldstein; and his great grandchildren, Angelo Berkovitz, Norah Berkovitz and Quinn Anderson.
The family suggests donations in Mel's memory be made to the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh with the designation of either JCC Age Well or JCC Aquatics.
