He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Ann; his children, Leslie Knoop (Mark Cartwright), Laura Knoop Very (Raymond Matthew Very) and Gregory Knoop (Aphrodite); his grandchildren, Benjamin and Isabella Very; his children, Heather and Fiona Cartwright; his parents, Elva Letitia and William August Knoop; his brothers, Burtis, Alan and David; and also Ann Elizabeth Kirk.

For his expertise, he sat on multiple committees for the National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Foundation pioneering the security standards of practice used to protect federal buildings.
