He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward C. Smith and Nancy F. Smith (Labezius); and his brothers, Rodney McDowell and Jeffrey D. Smith. He is survived by: his husband Richard M. Knerr; his sons, Russell J. Smith Jr. (Becky), Cory M. Smith and Timothy M. Smith (Jennie); and his siblings, Ray McDowell, Paul McDowell, Edward C. Smith Jr., Ava Nunn and Crissy Warner. He is also survived by five grandchildren.
