He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Persing and Jean Persing (Howard); and his daughters, Angela and Andrea Persing. He is survived by: his wife Shelly Kay Persing (Smith); his children, Joseph R. Persing (Michelle) and Kristin (Michael Sweitzer); his grandchildren, Mercy, Patience, Noble, Justice, Valor, Courage, Mitchell, Sammy Jon, Will and Millie; his great grandchildren, Adelaide and Felix; and his siblings, Joel H. Persing, Jay B. Persing, Jennifer Persing Snyder, Jill Persing McKinley, Judy Persing Gue and Joan Persing Mackley.
