He was predeceased by: his wife Lydia Schaefer; his parents, Herbert Schaefer and Janet Schaefer; and his brothers, Herbert, Robert and William Schaefer.
He is survived by: his children, Richard J. Schaefer Jr. (Rose) and Sandra Smith (Blaise); his grandchildren, Blaise Jr., Maximus Smith, Bailey McGorry (Casey), McKenzie, Reagan and Morgan Schaefer; and his great grandchild Jack McGorry.
