He was predeceased by: his parents, James Roland Mitchell and Florence Mitchell (Whitehead); his son Robert James Mitchell; his stepson Mark Slinn; his brother James Mitchell, Jr.; his siblings-in-law, Robert "Bob" George and Jan Mitchell; and his daughter-in-law Rena Baer.

He is survived by: his wife Ellen Mitchell (Backstrom); his sons, Eric Mitchell (Rena) of Lexington and Philip Mitchell (Julia) of Dripping Spring, Texas; his stepson Tracy Slinn (Crystal Ewing) of Gaithersburg, Maryland; his sister Barbara George of New Castle; his nieces and nephews, Bob George II, Jeff Mitchell, Amy Manley, Judy George, Mary George Gaittens and Julie Mitchell; Dora Mitchell. He is also survived by five grandchildren.
