Bernard F. Nordoff Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bernard F. "Bernie" Nordoff, who left this world peacefully at the age of 89. He was born the eldest child of Mary Alice Dahle and Andrew Bernard Nordoff, both of whom he now joins in eternal rest.
Bernie always had a joke and a hearty laugh, even with complete strangers. Bernie's life was marked by his generous spirit, sharp sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family and friends. He proudly served as a Captain in the United States Air Force, flying medevac missions during the Vietnam War. He also piloted the B-57 "Long Wing," a specialized high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, reaching elevations exceeding 63, 000 feet while wearing one of the earliest astronaut suits. He once flew this aircraft at 72, 000 feet over the equator where he could envision the curvature of the earth.
A lifelong learner, Bernie had a remarkable mind and an endless curiosity about the world. An avid reader of The Economist, Consumer Reports, and Scientific American, along with countless bestselling books, he was a walking encyclopedia of fascinating facts and insights, always eager to share something new.
Bernie will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him. His most cherished role was that of "Granddad," a title he embraced with boundless love, pride, and joy for his granddaughter, Maddy. He shared a special bond with his daughter Nicole (Charlie), his sister Jeri (Ken), and his beloved family members Matt, Rachel, Bill, and Darlene as well as his dear neighbors and friends.
Though our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the years we shared and the memories that will forever remain. Bernie had a kind spirit that touched the hearts of so many. He lived a life rooted in an abounding love for all who crossed his path. His words were always about how important it was to live a life in kindness to others and to our planet. Though he no longer walks beside us, we will always feel his presence and remember his lessons.
Bernie will be interred at the Bath National Cemetery. A celebration of his life is planned at a suitable time for family, neighbors, and friends.
