He is survived by: his children, John "Jack" Hartzell, III (Carolyn) of Bradford Woods, PA, Jeff Hartzell (Greer Lowry) of Bethel Park, PA and Judi Webb (Seth) of Alexandria, VA; his grandsons, Tyler and Adam Webb; his sister Ethel Jean Espy (late Ned) of Matthews, NC; and his nieces and nephews, Ned, David Espy (Mary Jo), Sarah Settlemyre (Steven), Loreen Strasser, Corrine Bierman (Paul) and Marni Durham (Steve).
