He was predeceased by: his parents, Hjordis (Sverre Medal) and Hans; and his former wife Gisela D. Medal. He is survived by: his wife June H. Medal; and his stepchildren, Judith Graves, Arnold Nilssen and Inger Davis. He is also survived by 13 step-grandchildren and 9 step-great-grandchildren.
