He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Ruth Silge Detwiler; his sons, Donald Detwiler Jr. and Scott Detwiler; his grandchildren, Sarah Detwiler and Jonathan Detwiler; and his stepchildren, JoAnn Kennedy Bowers, Patrick Kennedy, Aileen Kennedy Roberts, Carol Kennedy Hearle and Marybeth Kennedy Winstead.
