He was predeceased by: his parents, George G. Gates and Esther Gates (Freeman); and his siblings, George Ronald Gates, Gary Lee Gates, Anna Louise Garman and Junior Freeman.
He is survived by: his wife Carol A. Gates (Sweet); his children, Arthur Wayne Gates, Jr. of Waynesboro, Christina Mae Noll of Quincy, Todd Allen Gates of Waynesboro and Jason David Gates (Megan) of Waynesboro; and his sister Faye M. Noll of Waynesboro. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren.
