He was predeceased by: his parents, Rudolf Richard Gillwald and Elise Elli Laubsch Gillwald; his siblings, Waltraud Elli Neumann and Ekhard Rudolf Gillwald; and his grandson Matthew Edward Gillwald (Madeleine).
He is survived by: his wife Lois Elizabeth Smith of Hagerstown Maryland; his sons, Peter Gregory Gillwald (Shelley) and Ralph Gillwald (Cheryl); his stepdaughters, Lida Rose Portner (Harry) and Michele Rene Smith (Doug); his grandchildren, Eric Michael Gillwald, Karsten Rainer Gillwald (Sia), Anika Nicole Gillwald and Marissa Kathleen Gillwald; and his great grandchildren, James Maximilian Gillwald and Molly Dorothea Gillwald.
