Stephen Smith Obituary
Stephen (Steve) B. Smith, 69, of Williamsport, passed away peacefully and pain free on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a strong, courageous, yet very brief battle with stage 4 metastatic lung cancer. Steve wanted everyone to know that he was not giving up, but it was time to surrender.
Born on July 1, 1957, Steve was the beloved son of John "Jack" T. and Lois W. Smith. He grew up in Williamsport and graduated from Williamsport Area High School with the Class of 1975. Steve was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Williamsport, where in his early years, he took great pride in serving as an altar boy. In the 1980s he helped his parents to run the family business, Smiths Donuts. Steve went on to provide many years of dedicated service to his community through his hard work, working for many years at C.A. Reed before eventually retiring from Unique Industries.
Steve lived life to the fullest through his simple pleasures and immense love for his family and friends. Christmas was his absolute favorite time of year, and the beautiful holiday traditions he established will live on and be proudly passed down by his children. He cherished simple, regular traditions, like taking weekly Sunday night drives to anywhere and everywhere with his wife and children, drive-in movies and family cookouts. Nothing brought Steve more joy than surprising his children, whether it was through a small gift, a last-minute get-together, or planning a secret, spontaneous trip to the beach or Knoebels Amusement Resort.
An avid sports fan, he passionately cheered for Notre Dame football every season and deeply cherished the long car rides to Indiana with his sons and wife to watch the games in person. He also thoroughly enjoyed taking bus trips with his sons and nephews to NY Mets baseball games. He was happiest when his surroundings were filled with music, good food, and his family. He thoroughly enjoyed being a member The Polish Club and all of the great friends that he made there. His warmth, generous spirit, and love for life will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Lori, with whom he would have celebrated a beautiful milestone of 50 years of marriage on January 29, 2027.
Steve leaves behind a legacy through his children: Stacey Collins (Sy), Ginny Lewis (Tim Shultz), and Stephenie Wakefield (Jeff Kostelnick), all of Williamsport; Joshua Smith (Nichole) of Montoursville; and John Smith (Karen) of Georgia.
He was the proud grandfather of thirteen grandchildren: Melanie Vogt (Dallas Sunderland), Rachel Vogt, Benjamin Vogt, Cole Vogt, Madison Wakefield, Cheyanne Wakefield, Mercedes Lewis, Gabriel Persun, and Maria Lewis all of Williamsport; Marissa Kitchen (Logan), Ariana Smith, and Emilia Smith, all of Montoursville; and Mackenzie Gavlock (Micah), of South Williamsport.
He is also survived by his four cherished great-grandchildren: Donovan Sunderland, Lincoln Kitchen, Connor Kitchen, and Roman Gavlock.
Steve is also survived by his brothers, David Smith (Deb) of South Williamsport and Dennis Smith (Sherry Bischof) of Williamsport; and his sisters, Susan Prindle and Fran Bennett of Williamsport, and Cindy George of Montoursville.
He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Amy Bennett, Natali McMahon (Brandon), Erica Bischof, and Matt Bischof, all of Williamsport; Tom George (Jamie), Dave George (Nicole), and Kimberlee Andy (Kyle), all of Montoursville; as well as ten great-nieces and great-nephews.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lois Smith; his niece, Vicki L. Smith; and his brothers-in-law, Ricky George and Gary Prindle.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at Knight-Confer Funeral Home, 1914 Memorial Ave., Williamsport, followed by a traditional Smith dinner. A viewing will be held prior from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at the funeral home.
