He was predeceased by: his father John Makins; his wife Alice "Tootie" Schatz; his daughter Ellen "Robin" Schatz of Johnstown; his grandson Jimmy Schatz; and his siblings, Beverly Reighard, Dale Wadsworth, John "Jack" Makins and Christopher "Allen" Makins.

He is survived by: his children, Charlie Schatz (Natalie) of Johnstown, Jamie Keim (Donald) of Johnstown, Cheryl Rorabaugh (Dan) of Johnstown and James Jr. Schatz (Jodie) of Johnstown. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
