Michael Mooney Obituary
Michael J. Mooney Jr., 80, of Yardley, passed away unexpectedly on September 22, 2025, at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, PA.
Michael was born in Trenton, NJ, to the late Josephine (Henry) and Michael J. Mooney Sr. He had an amazing career as a Tennis Professional, where he had opportunities to teach and coach thousands of students including tennis teams at Bishop Conwell High and Akiba Hebrew Academy. He taught at Frosty Hollow, Pier 30 and was Head Pro at Riverside Racket Club also organizing and running leagues and tournaments. He was a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) and participated in organizing players for USTA Middle States tournaments. Notable students included Charles Barkley and Daryl Hall. His passion for the game was matched only by his love of sharing it with others. He possessed a wicked serve and a beautiful backhand. Throughout the years he participated in innumerable tennis matches and tournaments winning countless trophies. Upon his semi-retirement he was a professional limousine driver for many years.
Throughout his life, he was a mentor and beacon of positivity, known for being fun loving, outgoing, comforting--a true friend and a proud Irishman—he was amazing to be around. Michael was an alumnus of Rider University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education. In his youth he was a paperboy and served as an altar server at St. Francis Church, where fond memories were made and a lifelong friendship forged with Monsignor Dermond. They enjoyed every Super Bowl Sunday together.
Michael proudly served in the United States Air Force 1965 -1969, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. While serving during Vietnam at Takhli Air Force Base, Thailand, Michael was the Crew Chief for the F-105 Thunderchief "Thud" supersonic fighter bomber guaranteeing it was always in top condition for the pilots.
His spirited approach to life continued outside of service, evident in the countless hobbies he enjoyed. He had a lifelong passion for model railroading, displaying a gigantic train set at home. He also spent countless hours building and flying radio controlled model planes and was president for many years with local flying clubs.
Michael was undeniably a "Disney Dad," making magical trips to Disneyland and Disney World, he was also a big fan of Universal, the Harry Potter rides, and roller coasters. Michael had many accomplishments in his lifetime, but he was most proud of the marathons he ran with his daughter, Lauren, It did not matter if they won or lost, just as long as they finished together.
Michael leaves behind his wife of 32 years, Suzanne (Salsbury), daughter Lauren J. Mooney and his son, Michael J. Mooney, III. He also leaves behind an incredible number of caring cousins, friends, neighbors and extended family. He was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by all.
A memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday October 7, 2025, starting at 12 noon in the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 201 North Pennsylvania Avenue, Morrisville, PA 19067. Military honors will be rendered at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery , 830 Highland Road Newtown, PA 18940, following the mass.
