He was predeceased by: his wife Nancy Cooney; his parents, Austin P. Cooney and Madeline E. Cooney (Prest); and his siblings, John "Bud", James, Joseph Cooney, Donna Dube, Joan McDermott, Marion Humecky, Rita Whalen and Alberta Duffy.
He is survived by: his children, William "Billy" Cooney and Dawn Mello; his son-in-law David of Coventry, RI.; and his sister Elizabeth Lonergan of North Providence. He is also survived by numerous extended family members including many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Austin's memory to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation or the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
