He was predeceased by: his parents, Myrtis Elizabeth Bryan and Walter Kelso Woodward. He is survived by: his husband Joseph J. Handly; his daughter Julia H. Woodward of Whitinsville, Massachusetts; his sister Lois S. Woodward; his brother-in-law Henry F. Hughes of Birmingham, Alabama; his nieces, Margaret W. Hughes of Highland and Elizabeth W. Hughes of Berlin, Germany; his sister-in-law Linda M. Jacobs of Fort Myers; and his nieces, Elizabeth C. Wrenn of Cranston and Jennifer C. Carroll of Brittany, France.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Grace Episcopal Church (300 Westminster St, Providence, RI 02903). A celebration of life will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 at 12:30 PM at the same location.
He wrote extensively on architectural history; his publications include six of the Commission's surveys of historic resources, scholarly contributions to museum catalogues, the Society of Architectural Historian's Buildings on Paper: Rhode Island Architectural Drawings, the PPS/AIAri Guide to Providence Architecture, Westerly-Pawcatuck Walks, and articles in the Providence Journal.
