Dorothy May Cormier Obituary
Of Wakefield RI, passed away peacefully at 67 on April 10, 2026, surrounded by family. She was the devoted wife of the surviving James Cormier of Wakefield RI for 20 loving years.
Born to the late and missed Emil and Blanche (Larkin) Whitford on August 7, 1958, Dottie lived her life in the service of others. While having worked in sales and management, she later put her whole time into caregiving for her in-laws-Jim's parents Edgar and Rita Cormier-in their retired years. Dottie enjoyed gardening, sketching and painting, and intricate collections of porcelain dolls, gnomes, and fairies. In her loving life, Dottie was known to many neighborhood kids as "Mom Number 2", a title she was proud to be called. She had a family tree that extended far beyond her immediate family, including numerous animals she extended her home and hand to. She did find a joy, later in life, in renewing relationships and forming new connections through the internet. Her life was defined by caring and a quiet strength that touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Matriarch to a family she loved, as an adoring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she is additionally survived by her two brothers, William "Bill" and Emil Whitford Junior; her son Christopher Smith, his wife Bonnie, and their children Izik, Izabelle, and Avaery; Michael Smith (deceased), his wife Kristen, and their children Lucas and wife Kelsey Smith, Rachael and her husband Thomas DiStasio; her daughter Tammi-Lynn, her husband Wayne Matteson, and her son Codey Smith and his fiancé Koharig Badalyan; and several great-grandchildren. Dottie was preceded in death by her brothers Charles and Robert Whitford in years passed.
Dottie's ashes will be buried with her husband, when the time comes, at the Rhode Island Veteran's Cemetery, Exeter, RI.
