He was predeceased by : his parents, Mitchell Gilbert and Edna Gilbert (Cottongim); his wife Shirley Gilbert (Gilliam); his son David Gilbert (Diane); and his siblings, Letha Williams (Harold), Deborah Masterson (Roy) and Ralph Gilbert (Betty).

He is survived by : his sons, Robert Gilbert (Minh) and John Gilbert (Donna); and his sisters, Carolyn Griffin and JoAnn Marshall (Russell).
