With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Matthew L. Burbine (Westerly, Rhode Island), who passed away on March 31, 2023. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Burbine and Mabelle Burbine; his siblings, Joanne Cantrell, John, Joseph Burbine and Virginia Staubley; and his nieces, Laurie Stugard and Jamie Burbine of Westerly.

He is survived by: his niece Deanna Chapman of Westerly; his nephews, William Knapp of Westerly, David Burbine of Westerly, Carl Cantrell of Westerly and Kenneth Cantrell of Woonsocket; and his friend Jon Beck. He is also survived by his many friends, cousins.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Matthew's memory to either the Westerly High School Music Boosters (23 Ward Avenue, Westerly RI 02891) to honor the time he spent in band and chorus, and the love he had for music; or the TRC Foundation at Three Rivers Community College (574 New London Turnpike, Norwich CT 06360).

“My faculty office was across the hall from where Matt reigned supreme at the Three Rivers Community College tutoring center. We ran into each other often. He went above and beyond his duties as Head Tutor. He did everything! I will always remember our countless discussions about how best to serve the TRCC math students. I also enjoyed hearing about his motorcycle rides and skiing, that he eventually had to give up. Matt was one in a million June Decker Professor or mathematics TRCC”

“Matt lived next door to me in Jewett City, Connecticut. He was friendly, helpful, a delight to talk to. A great neighbor! Both of us shared some physical limitations. Matt often helped me while I was mowing my yard, and I helped him with his driveway and side walk snow removal. I'll miss his friendly wave whenever he saw me. It was an honor Matt, rest in peace.”

“Back in the mid 80's Matt shared a ski house with myself and several others from EB. He was a lot of fun and generous. End of December, 1987, Matt picked up several of us at Logan who had just returned from a ski week in Colorado. It was dark, cold and snowing viciously, but Matt picked us up and drove us all the way to Ludlow, VT. It was a blizzard, but Matt got us to the house safely. Attached is a photo of Matt with friends watching the 1987 Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge (Killington, VT)”
