He was predeceased by: his parents, Jonathan Mahl and Mabel Mahl; and his sister Thelma Kennedy. He is survived by: his children, Robert R. Mahl, II and Leslie L. Medeiros (Ed); his grandson Alexander; his close friend Sandra Gensemer; and his sisters, Opal Mahl, Shelby Bailey, Ruth Murray, Margaret Benoit, Darlene Burrell and Debra McEwen. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
