It is with great sadness that we announce the death of James H. Marcengill of Abbeville, South Carolina, who passed away on January 17, 2026, at the age of 83, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Fred and Adell Tannery Marcengill; his son-in-law Jefferson Blakely Bates, II; and his siblings, Fred Clarence Marcengill, Jr., Bettie Jennings and Donna Harrison.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara Brown Marcengill; his children, Jimmy Marcengill (Whitney) of Greenwood, SC, Ben Marcengill of Abbeville, SC, Millie Bates of Columbia, SC and Karen Chichester (Mark) of Huntersville, NC; his siblings, Patsy Getsinger of Greenwood, SC and Rev. Samuel Marcengill; his grandchildren, Caroline Chesnutt (Nick), Harrison Marcengill, Tanner Marcengill, Noah Marcengill, Whittlee Marcengill, Blakely Bates and Carew Bates; and his great grandchildren, Eddie and Alex. He is also survived by numerous nieces and a nephew.
Jim's contributions to his high school community were further honored when he was voted "Mr. Emerald" in 1961.
