It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dewitt Simmons Sr. of Awendaw, South Carolina, who passed away on May 14, 2026, at the age of 90, leaving to mourn family and friends. Leave a sympathy message to the family on the memorial page of Dewitt Simmons Sr. to pay them a last tribute.
He was predeceased by: his wife Emily Whiteside Simmons; his parents, Robert Simmons, Sr. and Josephine Porcher Simmons; his son James Simmons; and his siblings, Robert Simmons, Jr. and Rebecca Simmons.
He is survived by: his children, Rev. David K. Simmons (Dorothy), Dewitt Simmons, Jr. (Veronica), Joelee Simmons, Diviann S. Gilliard, Jenelle Blake (Renard), Chenita W. Miller (Willie), Betty Green, Mae Williams and Francenia Amiker (Ellaway); his siblings, Richard Simmons (Rosabell), Samuel Simmons (Rebecca), Alvin Simmons and Albertha S. Singleton; and his siblings-in-law, Ruth Simmons and Henry Whiteside. He is also survived by grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Viewing will be held on Friday, May 22nd 2026 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Sr. Memorial Chapel (4129 Highway 17 North, Awendaw, SC 29429). A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 23rd 2026 at 11:00 AM at the First SeeWee Missionary Baptist Church (5151 Hwy 17, Awendaw, SC 29429).
