He is survived by: his mother Sharon Kay Brown Powell of Nebraska; his wife Diane Herndon Melander of Beaufort; his stepdaughter Chastity Williams (Erick) of Hendersonville; his stepgrandchildren, Lindsey Williams and Justin Williams (Stephanie); and his siblings, Tim Melander (Karla) of Texas, Vickie Maschmeier (Gilbert "Buddy") of Nebraska, Debra Smith (Ron) of Nebraska and Jodi Dewey (Marc) of Nebraska. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed in his memory to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
