He was predeceased by: his parents, James E. Coates Sr. and Ruth Simmons Coates; and his sister Candace Coates Brown. He is survived by: his wife Kitty; his children, Kay Coates Malphrus (Travis) of Ridgeland, Katherine Coates Williams (John) of Beaufort and Thomas Clayton Coates Jr. (Chad) of Beaufort; and his brother James E. Coates Jr. (Jack) of Beaufort. He is also survived by six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
