It is with great sadness that we announce the death of James Madison Hartis of Bennettsville, South Carolina, who passed away on January 15, 2026, at the age of 97, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesse Eugene and Ethel Viola Furr Hartis; his wife Anna Margaret Sanders Edwards; his daughter Mary Dorothy Hartis; his grandson Thomas Madison Edwards; and his siblings, Raiford Hartis, Mary Elizabeth H. Lemond and Lamelle H. Hagerty.
He is survived by: his children, Vance M. Edwards (Lynda) and Amy E. Thomas (Phil); his grandchildren, Trey Edwards (Sarah), Jake Thomas (Stephanie) and Maggie T. Blackmon (Ryan); his great grandchildren, J. D. Thomas, Lincoln Thomas, Savannah Edwards, Lucas Blackmon and Madelyn Blackmon; and his siblings, Jerry Hartis (Dot), Henry Hartis (Vivian) and Theresa Ozment (Jay). He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
