He was predeceased by : his parents, Robert A. Schmidt and LaVerne K. Schmidt; and his brothers, Wayne R. Schmidt and Glen Schmidt. He is survived by : his wife Martha Ann Jones Schmidt; his children, Nathan Schmidt (Lauren) of Midlothian, VA, Stephanie Dawkins (Paul) of San Marcos, TX and Michael Schmidt of Cary, NC; his grandchildren, Julia, Heidi, Luke, Charlie, Lily, Hannah and Ransom; and his sister Lydia Schmidt Crane of Apex, NC..

“Martha, Nathan, Stephanie and Michael, It was my honor to share in marrying Bruce and Martha back at Kempsville Baptist nearly 50 years ago. It was my joy to count them dear friends over the years. The inspiration that Bruce gave to me with his dedication to Christ and the work of the Kingdom of God was always uplifting. Yesterday, I told my church that if anyone deserved to hear the words "Well done, my good and faithful servant" it would most certainly be Bruce Schmidt. My love, Doug Metzger”
