He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert E. Colter and Clara Louise Colter (Goodwill); his former wife Lillian Ricci Colter; his stepdaughter Elizabeth Valenly Bonacci; and his sisters, Margurite Hartford, Anna Traub and Joyce Nelson.

He is survived by: his children, James Colter (Jackie Morea) of Jacksonville, FL and Janice A. Colter (Jack Peringer III) of Darien, GA; his stepdaughter Regina Valenly of Hermitage, PA; his son-in-law Joseph Bonacci; and his brothers, Robert, John and William Colter. He is also survived by grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
