He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Mercier Green DeVeaux and Mary Hall DeVeaux; his children, James Mercier DeVeaux Jr. (Sallie), Cassie DeVeaux and Mary Hudson (Lee); his brother Albert Lionel DeVeaux; his grandchildren, Maxwell DeVeaux Hudson, Ryan Patrick Henry, Amanda Grace Hudson, Riley DeVeaux Henry, James Mercier DeVeaux III, Caroline Ravenel DeVeaux and John Wyatt Hudson; and his sister Mary Hall DeVeaux Carpowich. He was also cherished by nieces and nephews.
