He was predeceased by : his parents, John Alexander McMillan Jr. and Mildred Shepherd McMillan; and his siblings, Mildred McMillan Wood (Mimi) and Donald Shepherd McMillan (Maxie). He is survived by : his wife Caroline Houston McMillan; his children, Elizabeth McMillan Hagood (Maybank) and John Alexander McMillan IV (Betsy); his grandchildren, Alex (Caroline), Ian (Sadie), Caroline (Wells), Peter, Banks (Mason), Marianna (Marshall) and LuLu (Payne); and his great grandchild Callan. He is also survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held on Friday, April 26th 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM and on Friday, May 3rd 2024 at 11:00 AM. Visitation was held on Friday, April 26th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Myers Park Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Joe and Marge Grills Fund for the Study of the American Constitution and Government at Woodberry Forest School or The Institute for the Public Trust.
