She was predeceased by: her parents, Reverend Warren Hair and Irene Russell Hair; her husband Floyd Bradley Smith; and her siblings, Billy Hair and Norma Jene Rice.

She is survived by: her children, Brian Leach of Columbia and Christina Frye of Lexington; her stepson Charley Smith of Lexington; her grandchildren, William Blackwelder, Aaron Nance, Jonathan Leach, Danny Fetton, Summer Frye and Melinda Hutto; her great grandchildren, Baylee Leach, Alyson Leach and Polina Fetton; and her siblings, Bobby Hair of Kentucky and Kay Gibson of Maryland. She is also survived by many extended family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Foundation for Women Warriors or Pets Incorporated in Essie's honor.
