We announce the death of Gary C. Hershberger (Columbia, South Carolina), born in Durham, North Carolina, who passed away on September 23, 2026, at the age of 92. Gary will be remembered by family members, friends, and others whose lives were connected in meaningful ways. He was predeceased by: his former wife Geneva Hershberger; his wife Aretta Benfield Godby Hershberger; his parents, Basil Lee and Dolly Hershberger; and his siblings, Connie Cavanaugh, Patsy Jackson and Jimmy Seletos.
He is survived by: his children, Sheryl Wood, Roxanne Jeffcoat (Alvin), Vernon Hershberger (Barbara) and Robin Jenkins; his grandchildren, Shawn Brown (Meagan), Bryan Brown, Crystal Torres (Brandon), Jessica Sowell (Boyd), Miranda Jenkins, Ryan Dohrn (Jennifer), Brandon Hershberger (Mallory Ford), Nicole Hershberger, Brent Jeffcoat (Jennifer) and Jared Jeffcoat; and his great grandchildren, Tyler Torres (Breeana), Brianna Torres, Madison Brown, Zachary Jenkins, Baylee Brown, Layla Brown, Austin Brown, Kalyanna Bertram, Brady Jeffcoat, Grayson Jeffcoat, Jeremiah Jeffcoat and Jackson Jeffcoat.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 10th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Thompson Funeral Home (845 Leesburg Rd, Columbia, SC 29209). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 10th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Thompson Funeral Homes Chapel (845 Leesburg Rd, Columbia, SC 29209). A burial will be held on Saturday, October 10th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the Greenlawn Memorial Park (845 Leesburg Rd, Columbia, SC 29209).
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Lake Murray VFW Post 6740 in Gary's memory, in support of the veterans and community he cared so deeply about.
