He was predeceased by: his parents, John Lawrence and Mary Adele Cotton (Harmon); his wife Georgia Ellen Farnum Cotton of St. Matthews; and his siblings, Eloise, Mary Lawrence, Herbert and Robert.

He is survived by: his children, Rebecca Adele Langley (Cotton) of Columbia and John Edwin Cotton, Jr. (Glenda) of Seneca; his grandchildren, Whitaker Jane Langley of Columbia, Daniel Lewis Langley of Charleston, Brittney Ann Cotton McIver (Joseph) of Holly Springs, NC, Lyndsey Marie Cotton of Fuquay Varina, NC and Emilee Alyse Cotton of Clemson, SC; and his great grandchildren, Isaac Edwin McIver and Lydia Jo McIver.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greenlawn Baptist Church Fellowship Hall renovation.
