He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond Arthur and Aldrian Bates Nicklas. He is survived by: his wife Janet Benkwith Cohn; his children, Alyson Nicklas Arnold (Corey) of White Slamon, WA. and Palmer Heyward Nicklas (Whitney) of Las Vegas, NV.; his stepchildren, Britton Benkwith Cohn of Charlotte, NC and Richard Harris Cohn Jr. (Brooke) of Columbia, SC; his grandchildren, Wolfgang Randal Arnold, Shiloah Fox Arnold, Richard "Tripp" Harris Cohn III and Caroline Florence Cohn; his sister Alyson Nicklas Duff (John) of Embden, Maine; and his pet Ginger. He is also survived by one niece, one nephew, three great-nieces and one great-nephew.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 29th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the Dunbar Funeral Home (3926 Devine St, Columbia, SC 29205).
He also contributed to the design and construction of the initial American Lung Association Health House and the first U.S. Department of Energy Zero Energy Building in the Pacific Northwest.
