He was predeceased by: his parents, Chester Slater and Martha Farley Slater. He is survived by: his wife Brenda Lou Slater; his daughters, Cathleen M. Lipak (Terry) of Myrtle Beach and Paula E. Heimler (Craig) of Kingwood, TX; his grandsons, Austin Kelly, Nicholas Heimler and Mickey Heimler; and his siblings, Tommy Slater (Peggy) of Switzer, WV, Kay Ascough (Larry) of Garland, TX and Mable Hale of Pilot Mountain, NC. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
