He was predeceased by: his parents, John L. McKinnon Jr. and Elizabeth Singleton McKinnon; and his son Todd Thompson. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Smith McKinnon of Conway, SC; his daughter Kim Farrell (John) of Marietta, GA; his grandson Taylor Thompson of Decatur, GA; his brother Frank McKinnon of Chapin, SC; and his sisters-in-law, MaryLou Miller of Lancaster, SC, Sandra Pittman of Monroe, NC and Brenda Smith of Lancaster, SC. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
