He was predeceased by: his parents, Julian Walker Hughes and Julia Mae Calhoun Hughes; his son Robert M. "Bobby" Hughes (Vicki); his grandson Julian David Tanner; his great grandchild Ellie Walker Anderson; and his siblings, James Walker Hughes, Carolyn McLain and Delores Johnston.

He is survived by: his wife Juanita Cooper Hughes; and his children, Julian O. Hughes, Jr. (Elaine), Glenn W. Hughes (Wanda), Julia H. Clardy (Wayne) and Linda H. Tanner (late Ray). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
