He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Clarence Barnhill and Ninaree Hughes Barnhill; his son Samuel R. Barnhill, Jr.; and his brothers, Thomas C. Barnhill, Donald B. Barnhill and James A. Barnhill.

He is survived by: his former wife Anita Anderson of Conway; his children, Donna K. Barnhill of Conway, Sharon Vaught (Rusty) of Conway and John R. Barnhill (Michelle) of Myrtle Beach; his grandsons, Matthew Fowler of Conway, Christopher Fowler of Rock Hill, Nicholas Barnhill (Sydney) of Conway and Robert Barnhill of Myrtle Beach; and his siblings, J. C. Barnhill of Georgetown and Betty Strickland of Conway. He is also survived by cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
