He was predeceased by : his siblings, Patricia Quattlebaum and George Gates, Jr.; and his parents, Mildred Holsonback Gates Nunn and George Lawrence Gates. He is survived by : his wife Alice Marie Brazell Gates; his daughters, Tamela Gates Sneath (David), Cynthia Gates and Krista Gates Schnabel (Steve); and his siblings, Jesse Morgan Gates (Abbie) and Mary Salley (late Carl).
