He was predeceased by: his parents, Ulysses P. Chavis and Lena Oxendine Chavis; his wife Potista N. Chavis; his siblings, Sylvester Chavis, Adrian Chavis, Garnetta Chavis, Marcelene Johnson and Muriel Hunt; and his siblings-in-law, Myrna Chavis, Bobbie Jean Chavis, Rita Chavis, James Lowry and A. C. Locklear.

He is survived by: his children, Sabrina V. Chavis, Dino U. Chavis (Ann), John P. Chavis (Robin) and Patrice C. Dill (Mickey); his grandchildren, Chas Head (Ashlee), Niki Sansbury (Reed), Stephanie Arenas (Justin), John Chavis (Sheila Ann), Bre Chavis and Gina Poland (Zach); and his great grandchildren, Joaquin, Holland, Brennon, Kingsley, Charlotte, Temple Lynn and Emmalee.
