He was predeceased by: his parents, Junius Elmond and Flossie James Barnes; and his siblings, Felton Barnes, Julius Barnes, Hershell Barnes, Phillip Barnes and Flora Barnes Weeks.

He is survived by: his wife Peggy White Barnes; his children, Renda Barnes of Florence, Steve Barnes (Angel) of Florence and Michael Barnes (Deanne) of Easley, SC; his grandchildren, Lila Dodson (Josh) of Roanoke, VA, Zack Turner of Florence, Tucker Barnes (Stevie) of Conway, SC, Griffin Barnes (Madison) of Easley and Riley Barnes (Kaylee) of Easley; his great grandchildren, Wesley of Roanoke, VA, Arabella of Roanoke, VA, Elise of Roanoke, VA, Bowen of Roanoke, VA, Moriah Dodson of Roanoke, VA, Landen Turner of Florence and Fox Barnes of Conway; and his brother Harold Barnes of Fayetteville, NC. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
