He was predeceased by: his parents, George T. Cates and Doris Thompson Cates; and his sister Brenda Cates Chapman. He is survived by: his wife Jean Fox Cates; his children, Chris Cates (Tasha Bayne), Tommy Cates (Kimberly), Crissy Bosarge, Stephanie Vaughan (Steven) and Tamara Dominguez; his grandchildren, Andrue Cates, Tallon Cates, Lunden Randall, Cadence Cates, Kaylee Ellison, Glenn Woods and Lapita Dominguez; his sister Jan Kellett (Tony); and his brother-in-law Robert Chapman.
