With solemn hearts, we announce the passing of Betty McSwain Peterson Kirby of Gaffney, South Carolina, whose presence will be deeply missed, having departed on May 22, 2026. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
She was predeceased by: her spouses, C. B. Peterson and Collis Kirby; her parents, William Boyd McSwain and Mary Kiser McSwain Eggers; her close friend Lawrence Blackwood; her son David Peterson; her sister Carolyn Floyd; and her granddaughter Jennifer Peterson.
She is survived by: her daughters, Ann Gordon (Tim) of Blacksburg and Susan Howard (Mike) of Gaffney; her daughter-in-law Sherry Peterson of Gastonia; her grandchildren, Leah Stewart (Joe), Aaron Dillon (Lauren), Travis Gordon (Ashlee), Kirby Velazquez (Hector) and Katie Dover (Mike); her close friend Teresa Hardin; and her caregiver Sarah McIntyre of Gentiva Hospice. She is also survived by eleven great-grandchildren.
