He was predeceased by: his parents, Carnell Morris Grubbs and Zelphia Holcombe Grubbs; and his siblings, Carl Grubbs, Sharon Lollis and Grace Coster.

He is survived by: his wife Dianne Davis Grubbs; his son Earl David Grubbs, Jr. (Lizzy); his grandsons, David Ellis Grubbs, Robert Cathcart Grubbs, William Seabrook Grubbs, Clark Harling Sponseller and Davis Carter Sponseller; and his sister Mary Blackstone.
