He was predeceased by: his parents, James G. Newman and Goldie Mae Walker Newman; his wife Barbara Ellis Newman; and his brothers, James, Robert, David and Douglas Newman.

He is survived by: his son-in-law Scott Groves; his grandchildren, Collin Groves and Cara Groves; his sister Dreama Newman Landacre of Greensboro; and his nieces, Amber Dawn Williams, Angela Newman, Sandra Coombs, Christin Landacre and Laura Sergott.
