He was predeceased by: his parents, Silas Gist, and Cornelia R. Gist, Jr.; his son Birdell Hammond; his granddaughter Sharon D. Cureton; and his siblings, James Gist, Resella Gist, Viola Gist, Azalee Gist, Silas Gist, Jr., Henry Gist Barbara Lavern, Richard Byrd and Punchis Butler.
He is survived by: his son Randy Turner (Barbara); his grandchildren, Mariam Pinson (Charles Jr.), Lillian Renee Bailey (Oneal), Stephen Foster (Venita) and Stacey S. Hammond; his great grandchildren, Canon J. Bailey and Tyrell M. Bailey; his nieces and nephews, Kathy G. Sullivan, Yvonne Butler (Cookie), Carolyn G. Wood, James E. Gist, Jr. (Squink), David Grayson and Waymond Gist; his cousin Tommy Baker; and his daughter-in-law Claudia Hammond.
