He was predeceased by : his parents, W. P. May, Sr. and Johnnie Johnston May; his brothers, William Pierce May and James Carl May; and his granddaughter Elizabeth May.

He is survived by : his sons, Robert J. May, Jr. (Ann Anderson May) of Columbia and David Y. May (Kathryn Crosby May) of Greenwood; his grandchildren, Bryan May (Amy) of Lexington, Jonathan May (Torri Gamble) and Kathryn LaForge (Jay); his great grandchildren, Ellie, Kate, Sara Gates and Anderson; and his nieces and nephews, James Carl May, Jr. (Jimmy) of Ninety Six, Hanes Roger Williams, Leland Lollis Williams of Florida, Betty Jean May of Clinton, Deborah May Johnston of Barnesville, Georgia and Monty Williams Richardson of Greenwood.

Visitation was held on Thursday, April 18th 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Blyth Funeral Home & Cremation Services (1425 Montague Ave, Greenwood, SC 29649). A funeral service was held on Thursday, April 18th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel (1425 Montague Ave, Greenwood, SC 29649).
